Mr. Liang [Keung]
Writes to say that one of the Chinese Directorships of the North China
Railway is about to be vacant by the resignation of Mr. S.Y Tong and that he
is applying for the job, he has also asked me to say a good word for him to
you. This I hereby do, a Chinaman so, he is a very good sort and I heard
great [...] at the time of the celebrated [Coup d’Etat] I don’t think you
will have cause to upset the selection I know he wants to be honest! What a
lot of money we would have saved over this Nothern Ry if we had done what I
begged & implored the authorities naval, military, & civil to do i.e.
[jam] our men all along the Ry line the same way the French did along the Paoting
