Description:
This picture was taken by American railway engineer W. Barclay Parsons during a visit to Tongshan in1899.  The picture shows the “Rocket of China”, bearing road number “No.1” and clearly fitted with a new and slimmer boiler compared with when it was first constructed in 1881. Standing near its front is Kinder. A print of this picture was forwarded to Claude Kinder by letter on 18 April 1899, while Parsons was staying in the Shanghai Astor House Hotel and shortly before his departure from China and return to USA. Later Parsons used a cropped version of this photograph for publication in his book “An American Engineer in China”. (A3/156)
