Kaiping colliery locomotive No.2 with European staff members of the Chinese Engineering and Mining Company colliery. Locomotives Nos. 2 and 3 were purchased in 1882 from Robert Stephenson & Co. of Newcastle in England (builder’s Ns. 2397 and 2398 of 1881). These were the first standard-gauge locomotives imported into China. The tank engines have an unusual “Ogee” shaped saddle tank. Extract copies of Stephenson’s Engine Order Book in respect of these engines may be seen in this collection.(A8/35)
