A group picture of the Kinder family taken in England. It is probably taken in the mid-1860’s shortly before Claude’s Kinder’s father, Thomas William Kinder, moved with his family to Hong Kong to take up the post of Master of the Mint (late 1865). Although not positively identified, the figures standing (from left to right) are believed to be Claude, Dennett (Thomas’s eldest son), Mary (Thomas’s wife), Thomas and Ernest (Thomas’s second son). Seated on chairs (from left) are not positively identified but are probably Alice Mary (William’s eldest daughter), Arthur Kinder (William’s younger brother) and Arthur’s wife. The young children are probably Arthur’s family although at least one of the two girls might be William’s second and/or third daughters, Ada and Edith respectively. Ada Kinder died in Hong Kong at the age of 14 and her grave still survives in Hong Kong's Happy Valley Cemetery (A7/6)
