Description:
Photographs taken by P.A. Crush in 2006 of a miniature locomotive which is a (live-steam) working model replica of the “Rocket of China” built by Claude Kinder at Tongshan during the winter of 1880-1881. This model was constructed at the Tongshan workshops in 1909 and presented to Kinder as a retirement memento by his appreciative staff. It was shipped to Kinder in England in 1910 following his resignation and departure from China in 1909. The small maker’s plate, which is not attached to the model, indicates that the locomotive was made by “Chop Dollar” at Tongshan Works in 1909. Another small plate attached to rear of the cab records that “This locomotive is done according to the one which was originally formed by Mr. Kinder in China in 1879”. The date is error but is understandable given that the construction of the model was some 30 years later and the Chinese employees involved would not have been accustomed to the Western calendar. “Chop Dollar’s” real Chinese name was Suen Kam Fong (孫錦芳 Sun Jin-fang).
