Description:
Close-up of the Chinese temple on Phoenix Hill (鳳凰 s: 凤凰山  Fenghuang Shan) which was behind Kinder’s house and the other European staff quarters. The temple was renovated in the 16th year of the reign of Guangxu (光緒 s: 光绪 十六年 [1890]) according to a carved stone tablet, which has survived and was photographed in 2008 near the existing temple on this site. The temple has been restored several times. It was completely destroyed in the Tangshan earthquake of 1976 and was replaced by the concrete structure  standing there today.(A8/47)
