Note:
Although Joan Vinckeboons has never been to Asia himself he made quite a few city elevations, plans, coastal profiles and sea charts with combined information based on reports and sketches that masters, helmsmen and merchants made on their travels under the orders of the Dutch East India Company and Dutch West India Company. This particular view of Macau is taken in perspective 90º displaced to East. The prosperity of Macao at that time is manifest with the representation of 24 vessels of various sizes in the Inner Harbour and North Bay, recording the spectacular events of ocean trade at the time. The image shows a peninsula with a walled city, churches, dwellings, monasteries and forts. Actually the city, its buildings and fortresses are drawn in minutiae and usually with a brief legend. It can be seen the São Paulo Fort with the São Paulo cloister right behind it, the monastery of São Francisco, the churches of Santo Agostinho and São Lourenço, the A-Ma Temple drawn in Western style and the Barra Fort. Outside the city one can discern a number of houses and the church of São Lázaro, the Guia Lighthouse and the green land is the lotus-stem-like, the rice fields and meadows along Mong-Ha village.
