The first edition of the chart, in 1823, replaced an earlier Horsburgh chart of 1811 of the same region and this edition of 1848 also suffered new addictions. This map represents the South China Sea bound on the east by the islands of Taiwan and Philippines, on the west by Vietnam and north by China, including Macau, Hong Kong and Canton -Guangzhou-, the Hainan Islands is also represented. It offers a more accurate charting of the China coast, adding shipping route details. As the note underneath the title states the detail given was surveyed and/or compiled under the direction of Lieutenant Daniel Ross, who surveyed the coast of south China between 1806 and 1820.
