Note:
This is a map of the South China coast from Shangchuan Island Lantao (Latao) Island. The focus is on the surrounding area of Macau and the most important islands in navigational aid to and from Macau. Xiangshan Island is marked as 'Isla de Macao' as was common on western maps of this period, demonstrating the importance of Macau over Xiangshan for foreign trade. There are depicted on the map the famous islands of Shangchuan (Chang-chuen-chan), Lampacao (Lampe Kao), the Ilha dos Veados (Islas dos Ucados) Lapa (I. des Prêtres), Montanha (Montania) and the Thieves Islands (les Isles des Voleurs). The presence of the soundings are also another indicator that the map has a navigational aid purpose. They extend all the way from Shangchuan to the entrance of the Pearl River.
