Giacomo Gastaldi is considered the foremost Italian cartographer of the 16th century. His skills of compilation are comparable to those of Mercator and Ortelius, yet much less is known of his life. He was born in Villafranca, Piedmont, but had established himself in Venice by 1539, where he made his reputation as an engraver, geographer, and cosmographer. His contemporaries recognized his skill, as he was named cosmographer to the Republic of Venice, was a member of the Accademia Veneziana, and a major source for other geographers and mapmakers. He even had his own distinct style of copper engraving that made him a pioneer in his day. This particular map is part of a 3-sheet wall map of the East Indies with China, India, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Borneo, the Philippines, the Maluku Islands, Java and the western end of Japan. The map began its publication of a single section in 1559, which was intended as a separate map but additional sections were added in 1561. In 1565, two additional sections were added, in order to show all of Indonesia and neighboring islands as far south as Java Minor. In its original form the map extended only to the Equator and to remedy this, ca. 1565, two narrow sheets were made by the great Italian engraver Paolo Forlani to supplement the main body of Gastaldi's map. This lower addition bears an inscription in the lower left corner which reads 'si vende...' indicating the location of the shop of the publisher. The map has a major influence on the work of Ortelius and De Jode, in their representation of the coastlines. On the right far side of the map there is a list of about 100 toponyms on the map, were are given both the ancient and modern names for the places. The dedication to Marcus Fugger is strong evidence that Gastaldi had been given access to the Fugger family library, one of the most important libraries in the 15th and 16th centuries. During the latter the Fugger Library was perhaps the best private library in the world. However, Gastaldi has also incorporated information from Marco Polo's travels.

Original is a copperplate printed map on 3 sheets, 64 x 73 cm or smaller.

Underneath the scale line cartouche on the right side of the map: "Fabius Licinius excudebat"

There is a 32-point Mariner's compass rose with an arrow needle indicating north and a cross on the East (Levante) point.
