Note:
A fine early Dutch sea chart of Korea, Japan and the surrounding areas. The map is centered in Honshu, the main Japanese island; Kyushu -here wrongly named Cikoko- and Shikoku -named Tonsa. Hokkaido -still named Yeso- is shown only partially and Korea is still depicted as an island, with only one place name. There is an unusual land mass north and east of Japan, 'Compagnies Land'. These seem to be based on a 16th century Spanish of a land east of Japan that was rich with silver and gold. The Dutch East India Company financed two voyages, the first was a failure, the second, under Maerten de Vries (1589-1647) and Cornelius Jansz Coen (fl. 1643), managed to discover new lands but not the precious metals. In fact, this is the first printed map to include information from the manuscript map by De Vries.
Note:
Original is a copper plate printed map colored by hand, 44 x 54 cm. With text in French titled "L’isle de Iapon" on verso.

There are represented four ships and a sea monster.
