Note:
This is a hybrid between a view and a plan of the city of Guangzhou. It was published in the work 'Het gezantschap der Neêrlandtsche Oost-Indische Compagnie' of 1693 by Johannes Nieuhof. This book served as a major influence in the rise of popularity of the Orient in the early 18th century Europe. In this particular view, at the bottom it is depicted the Pearl River with a large number of vessels to demonstrate the city's importance as a trading harbor. Along the riverbank it can be seen people and boats. Inside the city walls it is seen the buildings depicted in a grid. The most important buildings are drawn in detail and are explained in the legend that identifies 15 places. The city is surrounded by nature and small villages in the valleys. This map was created during the final stages of the Qing conquest over the Ming. The Qing were the last imperial dynasty in China, and was the second conquest dynasty to rule all of China.
Note:
The original bird's eye view was published in the 'Het gezantschap der Neêrlandtsche Oost-Indische Compagnie, aan den grooten Tartarischen Cham, den tegenwoordigen keizer van China' by Johannes Nieuhof, 29 x 37 cm.
