This map is by Vincenzo Maria Coronelli one of the most influential Italian mapmakers, known especially for his globes and atlases. His book 'Isolario' is considered to be one of the most decorative atlases of 17th century. This is the second sheet of a two sheet map of China and it covers the eastern part with Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, northern Hainan Island and a partly visible Japan (the area of Yamaguchi, strait Kammon and Fukuoka -Fakata on the map). At mid-right on the sea there is a lettered index (A-G) that mark some places in Japan. The map shows administrative divisions, cities, villages, place names, rivers and mountains with exceptional detail along the coast and in the interior. In the northernmost part there is the Great Wall -here named Old Wall that divides China and the great Tartary- and the forbidding desert.
Note:
Original is a copper plate printed map, 50 x 37 cm.
