Christian Louis Joseph De Guignes learned Chinese from his father Joseph de Guignes (1721-1800) who was a renowned orientalist and sinologist. He spent 17 years as a Consul at Canton before returning to France in 1801. In 1808 he published the book 'Voyages à Péking, Manille et l'île de France', in which this map is included, in 3 volumes. On the first volume there is a summary of the History of China and the beginning of the trip to Beijing. The second includes the trip to Beijing and back to Guangzhou. The final volume he documents the daily life in China between 1783 and 1797. This particular map is a late 18th century city plan of Macau published in Paris at the beginning of the 19th century. An index on the lower right lists 44 landmarks of Macau and its surroundings.
