Note:
This map depicts the first scientific survey of the Islands of Okinawa, Jeju Island (Qualpart) and Goheung. It was the result of the voyage of Edward Belcher aboard the H.M.S. Samarang between 1843 and 1846. Belcher was already famous and had already been knighted for his service in the First Opium War and producing the first British survey of Hong Kong harbor. The Treaty of Nanking in 1842 that ended the First Opium War opened five Chinese ports to the British and this voyage was intended to survey the approaches of said ports. The map depicts the route of the Samarang ship within its bounds.
