A representative of the golden age of Dutch cartography in the 17th Century, Willem Janszoon Blaeu was appointed mapmaker to the Dutch East India Company for a long time, during which Atlas Novus published by Blaeu’s family had the largest collection of maps and was the most expensive atlas. This map is selected from this atlas. The depiction of China is still inaccurate, with the Eastern coastline drawn as a straight line and the Korean Peninsula an island separate from the continent. Nevertheless, the map positioned Macao at the east of the Pearl River estuary as well as other surrounding islands, illustrating the Dutch understanding of South China. In addition, a total of 10 coloured images delineating figures from China, Japan, India and Sumatra decorate the left and right border, and on top are nine illustrations of different cities such as Macao and Jerusalem. This map fully manifests Blaeu’s cartographical and decorative skills. In addition to cities and figures, the map displays other details such as animals, sea monsters, sailboats and damsels.
