This plan of Macao is from the 'Descripçam da fortaleza de Sofala, e das mais da India com huma rellaçam das religiões todas q[ue] há no mesmo Estado' by the Portuguese cosmographer António de Mariz Carneiro. The book is constituted by 48 water coloured plans of Portuguese fortresses in the East with descriptions of said fortresses. This particular plan of Macao seems to be made after the one by Pedro Barreto de Resende (15---1651) on the manuscript 'Livro das Plantas de todas as fortalezas, cidades e povoaçoens do Estado da India Oriental' by António Bocarro (1594-ca. 1642). Comparing to the original of Resende this view of Macau mantains the Border Gates -built in 1573- on the left bottom corner, the small Green Island and even though it keeps the coast of Wanzai, it is much simplified with no trees or houses on land. Also simplified is the representation of the Chinese village of Wangxia right outside the city. The cross on the mountain near Guia Lighthouse as well as the vessels on sea disappear on this copy.
