Note:
This plan of Macao is in the 'Livro das Plantas de todas as fortalezas, cidades e povoaçoens do Estado da Índia Oriental' by António Bocarro. The book was ordered by the king Filipe III of Portugal in 1632 to Miguel de Noronha, Count of Linhares and Viceroy of India (1585-1647). The Viceroy in turn ordered it to Bocarro. Bocarro was the keeper of the Torre do Tombo of India -where he remained until his death- and indeed wrote the descriptions of the fortresses, cities, etc., however the 48 plans on the manuscript are drawn by Pedro Barreto de Resende, a Portuguese cartographer and knight of the Order of Aviz. This view of Macau has in the foreground the Inner Harbour and the Border Gates -built in 1573- on the left bottom corner. Outside the city walls it is depicted the Chinese village of Wangxia between trees and cultivation fields. On the bottom right it can be seen a little bit of the coast of Wanzai. The view favors the city walls and several fortresses and it served as a prototype for many other representations of Macao in years to come.
