Note:
This is a map of the Pearl River and Ganjiang River, the only route from Macao to Beijing allowed to westerns. Given its importance quite a number of maps depicting these areas can be found, this particular one is Dutch but with clear Portuguese influence both in the depiction and the place names. The map is vertically divided in half by a red line, the left part is an upper extension of the part on the right. The route was up the Pearl River starting in Macao until Nanxiong (Namhun), then on foot to Nanungan (Nangan) and taking the Ganjian River until Beijing. On the river course a lot of places are identified with stylized buildings in different sizes to emphasize the importance of each place. Some pagodas are also marked for they played an important role in navigational aid.
