The map was published in the book 'Großer Atlas der Außereuropäischen Erdtheile' by Henrich Berghaus. He was a German geographer and cartographer, trained as a surveyor, who carried on a geographical school at Potsdam. Berghaus's written works were numerous and important. This particular map retrieved from 'Atlas von Asia' depicts the Chinese Empire and Japan. The map covers a vast area to which is given extreme detail with quite a number of toponyms, location of mountains, river courses and cities. On the left bottom corner of the map there is an explanatory legend mostly about units of measurement.
Original is a copperplate printed map colored by hand, 67 x 100 cm.
On the left upper corner of the map: "Berghaus's Atlas von Asia". And on the right bottom corner: "Gest. v. Mädel II u.s. sch."
