Note:
This is a nautical chart of the Bay of Bengal and of Tonkin, the South China Sea and the Philippines Sea was made by John Hamilton Moore, a well-known teacher of navigation. Born in Edinburgh and educated in Ireland, he subsequently joined the Royal Navy at Plymouth. In about 1770 Moore established a Nautical Academy in Brentford, Middlesex, and in 1772 he published his popular epitome of navigation under the title 'The New Practical Navigator and Daily Assistant'. Later he established himself at 127, Minories, near Tower Hill, where he not only taught navigation but carried on the business of chart-seller and purveyor of nautical instruments. Just as other navigational charts of the time, the focus is mainly on the coast lines, islands, islets and shoals with the a blank inland. Some soundings can be spotted on the paths of the most common East routes.
