Note:
This is an anonymous Portuguese chart of the terrestrial globe in 24 gores that by comparison it is most probably a work by Portuguese cosmographer and cartographer Bartolomeu Velho. The globe reveals various ideas expressed by Velho and the system of projection, so unusual in Portuguese charts, is in his style. Another fact is the presentation of the zodiac, which was a favorite of his, and the graduated meridian is similar to other charts by him. One of the most important characteristics however is the "vertical" shape of Japan only known in his charts.
Note:
Original is a manuscript chart on parchment, 37 x 43 cm.
Note:
Title from provenance library.
Note:
On the 24 gores it is represented the known world including Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas with the absence of the Southern continent. Japan in his Velho's characteristic "vertical" and the representation and California is extended fading in the unknown northern areas.
Note:
Relief shown pictorially.
Note:
Landmasses colored green.
Note:
The gores are on a decorated background with golden flowers and black rosaceae which some authors consider of Persian influence.
